TOXIC DRINK

Posted by Leigh Ann Bauer | Mar 18, 2024 | 0 Comments

Over thirty years of practicing DUI defense, I advise clients that there is one alcoholic beverage that everyone should avoid. Especially if the cocktail is being poured by a bartender.  This beverage is Redbull and vodka.   Redbull, especially diet, is super sweet.  The sweetness of the beverage masks the alcohol, especially vodka.  Vodka by itself does not have an odor, so this alone can be deceptive to the drinker.  If a bartender is heavy on the pour, you won't be able to discern that it is a strong drink due to the sweetness of the Redbull.  Redbull is a damning drink when it comes to one of the standardized field sobriety tests known as the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test.  The Officer is looking for a bumping of the eye, similar to a marble rolling over sand.   If you simply consumed Redbull with no vodka, you would likely fail the HGN/eye test. Why? The drink is loaded with caffeine and taurine.  These two ingredients alone are a recipe for disaster.  My blog tip of the day is to avoid drinking Redbull and vodka at all costs when you are at bars drinking alcohol. If you drink Redbull alone, be mindful that you could test positive for Nystagmus (the involuntary bumping of the eye) and be stone cold sober.  In fact, in Europe, many countries have banned this product because of the adverse physiological impact it has on the human body.
